Nonprofits of all sizes, but especially smaller and start-up organizations, often need some help understanding the role of an effective board. So often, small organizations use the “Friends and Family Plan” for board recruitment. This plan uses the people who you know and like you well enough to serve on your board.
But so often, that results in board service in name only, and doesn’t create an engaged and effective board of directors.
Larger organizations often have effective boards for a decade or longer, but leadership transition or just plain stagnation makes them less effective.
